Dallas Summer Musicals provides many ways for kids of all ages to enjoy Broadway theatre!
DSM Academy of Performing Arts
Dallas Summer Musicals Academy of Performing Arts offers professional training – integrating the disciplines of singing, acting and dancing – into the unique genre of musical theatre. Classes are offered at the Academy, as well as in satellite locations throughout the Dallas metro area. Instruction includes classes, workshops and performances. When possible, cast members of DSM productions provide master class workshops. To ensure access to students of all socioeconomic levels, the school offers scholarships to promising students with limited financial resources.
DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards
Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the event celebrates high school musical theatre programs. This annual awards ceremony features performances by students from dozens of schools throughout the Dallas metropolitan area.
Designed to entertain, educate, and empower young people, Discover Theatre brings thousands of area students to the theatre each year to see professional productions targeted to young audiences. Students have been delighted by performances of FRANKLY BEN, FROG & TOAD, and FLAT STANLEY. The theatre experience is enhanced with fun and informative activities to reinforce the lessons instilled in each performance.
This free membership program for kids was created to develop tomorrow’s musical theatre audience. Through exciting activities, special events, backstage tours and informational exchanges about shows included in the Kids Club membership, children gain an interest, hands-on knowledge and appreciation of the performing arts.
Seats for Kids
Seats for Kids provides a meaningful theatre arts experience to low-income, at-risk and special needs children. Every year nearly 2,000 children in the Dallas area experience live musical theatre, many for the first time, through this program. Non-profit youth agencies and Title 1 schools are eligible to participate. DSM provides children, their teachers and chaperones with free tickets, as well as professionally drafted study guides to support attending the performance. Teachers report that this experience is unforgettable and life-changing for many children.
The Stage Right program introduces at-risk youth ages 12-15 to arts and cultural events. Participants attend a 6-week summer program that follows “Positive Action” curriculum that seeks to improve society by teaching and promoting the positive actions that lead to success and happiness: feeling good about who you are, what you are doing, and how you treat others. Dallas-area teachers, counselors and programs for at-risk youth recommend students for the program as part of their ongoing efforts to keep them from joining gangs, getting involved in drugs and crime, or engaging in other activities that prevent them from being successful. Participants are rewarded with a field trip to attend a DSM performance and a meet and greet with the cast.
